What is the google sandbox?

You might be suffering from the "sandbox" if your google traffic dies overnight...
If you think of it as a "playpen" then you might get the analogy easier...

New site = new baby
Google gives the baby a chance in the search engine results - if its picked up and gets traffic quickly from other sources (like being mentioned in forums, links pages) then google thinks its grown up enough to stay playing out in the big search engine results.
#If you don't get other links in and mentions then google thinks your site needs to sit in the playpen until its made friends with other sites.

How long this takes depends on lots of things but if you make links etc it should pass sooner.

Google Article on wired - Google vs. Evil
The world's biggest, best-loved search engine owes its success to supreme technology and a simple rule: Don't be evil. Now the geek icon is finding that moral compromise is just the cost of doing big business. By Josh McHugh

Guest Rant - Subscription Search Engine Services?

Other new rants - This one about the new autolinks which will be in gogole's toolbar. Existing users o the toolbar can't opt out as the googletoolbar auto updates. This to me is as worrying as google seemingly be able to ad links to my page - your page anyones page. This will upset the purists who support their web pages without resorting to advertising. I hope google rethink this as it will be a spyware style intrusion.

I have emailed the BBC:-

Re: google toolbar story on BBC News 23rd Feb 2005
I make my living selling items through websites. If google continues with this auto link feature then potentially I and thousands of webmasters will be forced to close our websites.
My sites do have a commercial aim and I feel the google bar attack is outrageous. Microsoft tried this a few years ago and the web community rebelled. For some reason google is seen as too powerful to upset.
One company dominating the internet in this way is scary. It means they can do this version of spyware and get away with it.
At the moment it is not automatically switched on but who is to say that in future version it won't be automatically on?

This site publishes a workround
http://www.searchguild.com/tpage19006-60.html
Its javascript so has the potential to slow pages down making the web experience worse for users.

The polite way for google to work this would be for webmasters to have to insert a code to allow it. That way those that want the features can have benefit.
Enforcing it on every site is not fair on webmasters. We work hard making content, writing unique features and articles and shouldn't be robbed like this.

Google's comment that no one is paying for links doesn't wash. It is a commercial organisation and I am sure companys will fight over being linked to in this way.

Google also says it welcomes users comments on this feature. However a "google" for "contact google about toolbar" just takes you to a page of FAQs.

This is a serious issue for people who use the web. We should all take a stand and not be dictated to in this way.

google and the nasty 302 monster. Are you sitting comfortably?

Is this the beginning of the end?

To pay to have your site reviewed for inclusion into search engines is a shocking state of affairs.

Of course paying for the speedy review doesn't guarantee you placement, but if you don't want to pay you can still add your URL (on Altavista for example)for free. But who knows how long that will take!

Support search engines which look at the quality of your site not your ability or willingness to pay.

If you've been badly treated by one of the pay to review search engines then please let us know. Email us at mogga@mogga.com

Art Sackett - Why I No Longer Support the Web Standards Project
First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

Scandalizing the Engines
------------------------
A site devoted to boycotting pay-for-play engines and directories calls openly for a boycott. While chances of actual success may seem slim, many webmasters will nevertheless probably appreciate the sentiment.

If you didn't find this site its because we didn't pay to have it submitted to search engines. No offence intended to anyone making money out of people by charging them to review sites with NO guarantees of inclusion.

To be reviewed for inclusion on this site please send a bunch of used £5 notes to Mogga. Cheers. There aren't any guarantees that you'll be included, but what the heck.
